SARS 2026 Tax Season Deadline: Individual Taxpayers Have Until 23 October to Submit Returns

The clock is ticking! South African individual taxpayers have until Friday, 23 October 2026, to submit their 2026 income tax returns. With the deadline just around the corner, taxpayers are encouraged to ensure their tax affairs are up to date to avoid unnecessary penalties and complications with SARS.

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?

The South African Revenue Service (SARS) has the authority to impose administrative penalties on taxpayers who fail to submit required income tax returns.

These penalties can start at R250 per month and increase to as much as R16,000 per month, depending on the taxpayer's assessed taxable income.

Importantly, these penalties are not necessarily once-off charges. They can recur monthly until the outstanding return is submitted, subject to the applicable legislative limits. In certain circumstances, penalties may continue for up to 35 months, potentially resulting in significant financial consequences.

Do You Need to Submit a Tax Return?

Not every individual is required to submit an income tax return. Generally, individuals earning less than R500,000 annually from a single employer may be exempt from submitting a return, provided they meet all the relevant SARS requirements.

However, this exemption does not automatically apply to everyone earning below R500,000.

Taxpayers with additional income, rental income, investment income, capital gains, or other circumstances requiring disclosure may still need to submit a return.

Our advice: Never assume that you are exempt simply because your annual salary is below R500,000. Confirm your filing obligations before the deadline.

Were You Auto-Assessed by SARS?

Taxpayers who received an automatic assessment should carefully review the information SARS used to calculate their tax liability.

Although auto-assessments can simplify the filing process, they may not account for all allowable deductions or relevant financial information.

Items worth reviewing include:

  • Medical expenses and medical aid contributions.

  • Retirement annuity contributions.

  • Travel allowances and qualifying business travel expenses.

  • Donations to approved public benefit organisations.

  • Additional income and other allowable deductions.

If your auto-assessment is incorrect or incomplete, you may need to submit a corrected return or follow the applicable SARS correction or dispute process.

Provisional Taxpayers and Trusts Have More Time

The 23 October deadline applies to non-provisional individual taxpayers.

Provisional taxpayers and trusts have until 22 January 2027 to submit their 2026 income tax returns.

Don't Leave Your Tax Affairs Until It's Too Late

Failing to submit a required return can result in more than administrative penalties. Outstanding returns may delay refunds, complicate tax compliance status applications and create unnecessary difficulties when dealing with SARS.
