SARS steps up debt collection efforts as revenue target comes into focus
The South African Revenue Service (SARS) is increasing its debt collection capacity as it works towards its collection target for the 2026/27 financial year.
A Daily Investor report, citing Investec chief economist Annabel Bishop, says SARS collected R42 billion in outstanding debt during the first five months of the tax year. At that pace, collections could reach just over R100 billion - below the reported target of R126 billion. The report also says SARS has deployed an additional 1,500 debt collectors to support its efforts.
The figures highlight the importance of staying up to date with tax obligations and responding promptly to SARS correspondence. If you are unsure about a tax notice, payment arrangement or outstanding return, consider getting professional advice before taking action.
